Ripping the Python

Abu Jahal (L.A.) owned a huge python that he kept in a well near Makkah. Whenever a new baby was born, he used to leave the python near the child. If the child died upon looking at the python, it was considered illegitimate.

When Ali (A.S.) was born, Abu Jahal brought the snake to Abu Talib’s (A.S.) house. When he did not find Abu Talib (A.S.) anywhere, he simply put the snake near Ali’s (A.S.) cradle and left.

When he came back later, he found Abu Talib (A.S.) outside the house, smiling. He went up and asked if Ali (A.S.) was alive. Abu Talib (A.S.) replied affirmatively. Then Abu Jahal (L.A.) asked permission to get his snake. Abu Talib (A.S.) replied:

“Oh that! You can’t. When it came up to Ali, he put both his hands in it’s mouth, grabbed it’s jaws and tore it in two pieces. And as long as he kept finding it’s pieces, he kept playing with them and tearing them in two.”
